 |
The C-47 was the military development
of the Douglas DC-3 airliner. Without a doubt,it is the most
famous of all military transport aircraft and known in nearly
every part of the world as the Dakota. It has been used by practically
every nation from the USA to the Soviet Union, by both Chinas
and all of the Allies of World War II. After WW II, it was used
in the Berlin arlift, in Korea, during Arab-Israeli conflicts,
and finally became famous in its offensive role in Vietnam as
the AC-47 Gunship (Puff the Magic Dragon). The C-47 served in
every theater of WW II and was used as a trooper and a freighter.
It secured immortal fame as the transport and glider-tug used
by Allied Airborne forces during the invasion of Normandy. The
model shown in the photo sports the black and white wing bands
that indicates its involvement in "Operation Overlord"
the Allied landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944. |
