Douglas C-47 Skytrain

The C-47 was the military development of the Douglas DC-3 airliner. Without a doubt,it is the most famous of all military transport aircraft and known in nearly every part of the world as the Dakota. It has been used by practically every nation from the USA to the Soviet Union, by both Chinas and all of the Allies of World War II. After WW II, it was used in the Berlin arlift, in Korea, during Arab-Israeli conflicts, and finally became famous in its offensive role in Vietnam as the AC-47 Gunship (Puff the Magic Dragon). The C-47 served in every theater of WW II and was used as a trooper and a freighter. It secured immortal fame as the transport and glider-tug used by Allied Airborne forces during the invasion of Normandy. The model shown in the photo sports the black and white wing bands that indicates its involvement in "Operation Overlord" the Allied landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944.
