| Without question the M1A1 tank is the best main battle tank in the world. It is the most radical departure in US tank design since WW II. The M1A1 tank was first committed to combat in 1991 during Operation Desert Storm. During the war, the M1A1 was credited with destroying over 2000 Iraqi tanks, with not a single Abrams being destroyed by hostile tank fire. Powered by a 1500 Hp gas turbine engine, the 62 ton Abrams has a 42 mph road speed and a 30 mph cross country speed. Armament for the M1A1 consists of a 120 mm main gun, a co-axial machine gun, and an M2 .50 Cal Browning machine gun. Equipped with the new British Chobham armour, the M1A1 is virtually impenetrable to enemy tank fire. The M1A1 has many more features, too many to list here. |
